Shelter Island Poetry

 

Tonight we present three east end poets - George Held, Pauline Yeats and Virginia Walker - reading at the Shelter Island Library in June 2021 at the library’s annual Richard Varney poetry session.

Poetry lover Richard Varney grew up in Garden City and spent summers on Shelter Island.

He graduated from Harvard and worked in government and the corporate world. 

Varney took over the poetry roundtable at the Shelter Island Library in 2016.

After Varney died of cancer in 2018 his friends set up a poetry collection in his name at the library.

Tonight’s poetry session was organized by Shelter Island poet Virginia Walker.

Diane Glancy & Spencer Reece

Long time friends Diane Glancy and Spencer Reece recorded by Canios Cultural Café in December 2020.

Diane Glancy is professor of English at Macalester College in Minneapolis Minesota.

Her Pushing the Bear: A Novel of the Trail of Tears was published in 1998 by Mariner Books.

Her sequel, Pushing the Bear: After the Trail of Tears tells the story of the Cherokees resettlement in the hard years following Removal.  It was published in  2009 by the University of Oklahoma Press.

Spencer Reece was born in 1963 in Hartford, Connecticut. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker and in many literary journals

His collection The Clerk’s Tale was published in 2004 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Moby Dick Marathon - Chapter 9 The Sermon - at Sag Harbor Whalers Church

                 

East End Ink presents a portion of a reading of Herman Melville's Moby Dick recorded at Sag Harbor's Old Whalers' Church in April 2019.

It is part of a complete reading of the classic American novel produced by Canios Cultural Café on Melville's 200th Anniversary.

Chapter 9, The Sermon, is narrated by Southampton Press editor Joseph Shaw.

Actor Harris Yulin reads Father Mapple’s sermon. 

Members of the Choral Society of the Hamptons sing a hymn.

The organist is Walter Klauss.

Moby Dick Marathon - 2021

A marathon reading of Herman Mellville’s Moby Dick was staged at locations in Sag Harbor in September 2021

It was produced by Canio’s Cultural Café. 

 We present excerpts from the reading recorded at Canio’s Books.

The reading was preceded by an introduction by Denise Silva – Dennis of the Shinnecock Nation who invoked the spirit of the first native whalers on Long Island.

Canios Books 40th Anniversary

Canios Books in Sag Harbor celebrated its 40^th anniversary in November 2020 with an on line gathering of writers and friends of the book store.

Canio Pavone opened the bookstore in 1980 and it soon became a hangout for writers and readers. 

Nelson Algren gave the first reading at the bookstore in 1981.

Marathon readings of Moby Dick became an annual occurrence starting in 1985. 

Maryann Calendrille and Kathryn Szoka took over the bookstore in 1999.

They established the non-profit Canio’s Cultural Café in 2009
